For 10 days, post the cover of a book you like and challenge someone else to join in.

Today's book is The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov.

Don't let the title or author fool you, for this is a murder mystery book. It's also the first book in a trilogy about Elijah Baley, a homicide detective in New York in the year 4950 or so, and his partner, R. Daneel Olivaw. The next two books are The Naked Sun and The Robots of Dawn. Each book is a standalone.

By the time our story opens, all the people on Earth live in great domed cities (the 'caves of steel' referenced by the first book's title). There are, however, a few 'Spacers' (humans born on other planets) visiting Earth and staying in 'Spacetown' which is situated outside New York's dome.

Elijah is less than impressed at being chosen to investigate a murder in Spacetown as it means he has to leave the dome, and he - like all humans on Earth - is severely agoraphobic. To make matters worse, Elijah is assigned a Spacer partner: A humaniform robot named R. (Robot) Daneel Olivaw.

~~~
This isn't my favourite Elijah Baley book. My favourite is the 3rd book (The Robots of Dawn). However, the 1st sets the scene for the other two and is an exciting thriller of a book in its own right.
Poor bloke on the cover looks like a famine victim! Look at those cheekbones.
Jeepers, it's been years and years since I read those books. Asimov used to be a big favourite of mine.
