Updates on me and the mouse situation.
Mar. 31st, 2021 02:15 pmSo far, the mice (yes, plural. There are, apparently, two) are evading capture and ignoring the sonic repellents. The mouse trap has been sprung at least twice but all it caught was a roving Ferrero Rocher. Some carers are amused, some are not, and one wants to take them home with her.
I've ordered more sensitive traps and I'm hoping some swiss roll will tempt them in.

My doctor's coming tomorrow to give me my 2nd Covid jab. I was surprised to get a phonecall about it today as I thought it would be longer before I got the 2nd jab. Apparently, it's only 4-12 weeks between doses for the Astrazeneca. I'm just hoping I don't feel ill after it. I didn't with the 1st.
~~~
Ruth, my Occupational Therapist, rang yesterday. She's received the go ahead to get me a Neater Eater. I'm rather astonished as it's £5,500 to buy one. (That's not a typo.) I don't know when it'll be delivered.
Well, this sucks
Jan. 6th, 2021 10:30 amI'm stuck in hospital. 2 Covid tests came back negative, so it's probably only my lungs. *laughs like a Victorian heroine*
I can go home once I maintain my own oxygen levels and not at a measly 79℅ either.
I had to reset 2 passwords just to get to post.
Update: It looks like it was a little bit of pneumonia.
Sleep...or lack of it.
Oct. 15th, 2020 06:53 amIt's amazing how long you can spend trying to get to sleep. Tonight, it's joint pain that's keeping me awake.
I think I've been awake since about 2. I must have dozed on and off as there's no way I've been awake for 5 hours.
Paracetamol isn't working either.
ETA: And now my gas central heating isn't working either. :o(
24 hours in Room 7 - part 2
May. 25th, 2020 01:43 pmI woke up (again) at 7.45 and buzzed for a nurse. When I asked about getting up, I was told the hoist was broken so they couldn't hoist me. They'd told the ward manager. I asked if they couldn't get an emergency hoist from somewhere. "No, I don't think so." Then the nurse ran away.
Stargate: Atlantis - Sateda.
Sep. 29th, 2019 11:02 amI have a horrible cold. I always get toothache with my colds because my sinuses play up. And there's nothing quite like lying in bed and realising your nose is dripping all over your shoulder.
But I've just watched Sateda (season 3). Oh, Ronon! ♥ I love John (badly) expressing how much he cares to Teyla, Carson and Rodney arguing so long the wraith killing is over before they can join in, Rodney's underwear, and Carson finally killing that SOB with a drone. Oh, and Rodney backtracking and disclaiming all credit when it looks like Ronon is going to be angry he didn't get to kill the head wraith.
Does anyone else want Ronon and Carson friendship fics? I have a headcanon that Ronon would be really protective of Carson (especially outside of Atlantis) after Carson removed his tracker. Carson isn't a fighter (though he's as loud and shouty as Rodney, in his own way). I think Ronon would want to keep him safe.
Article: Blinded by my contact lens
Apr. 22nd, 2017 09:55 amBBC article.
Letting water get anywhere near your contact lens can let Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) infect your eyes.
AK is "a rare but serious eye infection caused by a micro-organism that's common in tap water, sea water and swimming pools".
Symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis include the following:
Sensitivity to light and excessive tearing
Amazon Echo
Nov. 29th, 2016 12:07 pmHave any of you heard about Amazon Echo? It sounds amazing!
Can you imagine how useful this would be for disabled people? You can tell it to arrange for a taxi, so probably an ambulance as well. Tell it to turn on or off lights or the TV or play music...
Obviously, your lights/TV/whatever would have to be connected or able to receive a signal but talk about helpful.
Carers are still unappreciated
Aug. 24th, 2013 11:22 pmThe health secretary for the Government (link goes to the BBC website), said that:
"an ageing population and a "dementia time bomb" meant helping carers stay in work was an "economic necessity" for the country."
By carers, he meant 'unpaid carers'. If they leave work they'd have to receive benefits as even carers can't live on fresh air and no food. The benefits, btw, are meagre. Yes, their rent/council tax are paid, but the rest of their bills are supposed to be covered by the invalid care allowance they receive. Minus the bedroom tax if they're receiving housing benefit and have an extra bedroom, of course.
When I stopped being a carer the invalid care allowance was the princely sum of £92 a week. It was only that high because I had no other income and was looking after my mother. Any other income/caring for your partner or spouse and that invalid care allowance drops to less than £60 a week...and that's the current rate.
The same article said:
"Meanwhile, a report has warned England is facing a shortfall in the number of people able to give vital unpaid care."
I've been a carer. I looked after my mum for 12 years - 10 of those years were without any kind of day off. It's health-degrading, nerve-straining work, as you're on call 24/7 endlessly. Well, until your health degrades to the state where you're unable to provide care any longer.
So, the Government wants people to do that at the same time as holding down a full time job. Apparently this country is filled with people who don't need downtime or even sleep.
How Not to Say the Wrong Thing
Jun. 17th, 2013 11:37 amThis article is good, though I think it only applies to life-threatening illnesses or crises.
I've found, as a sufferer of Muscular Dystrophy, that the majority of people don't actually want to hear about your health trials. That you're expected to put on a brave face so they feel better.
I've also found that some people really do make it all about them, as they garner sympathy for *you* being disabled but don't waste their time giving you sympathy (see that 'brave face' comment above). And, actually, that pisses me off more than anything.
