24 What's the first thing you do when you get on the computer?

I usually have to reset the clock. The internal battery in my desktop has gone so my computer clock usually stops when the plugs are turned off at night.

What about you guys?

Firefox

Is anyone else tired of the endless updates from Firefox? Their last update was 23rd March but another update notification has already started popping up.

I clicked on the link to provide feedback and was told they've suspended feedback until after they've improved how it's collected. (Maybe you should work on that instead, huh, guys?)

I suspect they're tired of being told to knock it off with the super quick updates. But that could be me being grumpy.

If Sci-Fi movies mentioned 2020, it was always very hi-tech. The computers might have been the size of washing machines, but there were flying cars, humanoid robot servants (usually homicidal), and lots and lots of polyester.

Did any of them predict teeny tiny computers you could fit in your pocket? No. But, if they had, would they have been homicidal?

Anyway, despite the lack of flying cars, 2020 it is. I hope it's a kind and gentle year for us all. *hugs*

Why do manufacturers or programmers assume people want the most annoying setting on text programmes? Every single time, in Word, on phones, on Kindles, inputting text leads to a fight between what I want to write and what the programme insists on inserting. Then I have to track down the corresponding setting and turn it off in order to regain control over what the text actually says.

I was leaving a comment on a Hobbit fic on Ao3 and mentioned Nori. The keyboard didn't like that at all. Nori? Obviously a mistake! I obviously wanted the word 'Both'! In another comment, on Reddit this time, mom was obviously min. Gah!

I know what I'm typing! Stop fixing my words! Grrrr!

Technology, I tell ya. This is how the war between mankind and machines will start...with FU Autocorrect.

I just had an automated phonecall from BT. It said they'd been trying to contact me, my IP address had been compromised, and my internet connection would be shut off in 24 hours. Press 1 to speak to a technician.

I did nothing and the call was disconnected.

I googled and it's a scam. The next step would have been to let them access my pc.

17. What does your joy look like today?

Playing Puzzle Express. It's a simple game: You fit shapes into an oblong grid in order to fill every space. The shapes appear on a conveyor belt and you have a limited amount of single squares. You can easily run out of room before you get the right shapes to finish off the grid.

The grids are all containers attached to the back of a train and you go to different US cities and are shown info about each city.

What I really like is that every completed line shows a bit of the background picture (the completed grid shows the whole picture) and you can add your own pictures to the game. I love completing a line and trying to figure out which pic it is. I get so disappointed when it's not one of my pics.

I've been trying to get an English version of the game for ages now as the CD Rom versions are in German! I finally found it as a download on WildTangent.

13. Do you celebrate the things you do have?

Not enough. I'm in my own home, with the help I need. I have a pc, a kindle, and the internet to entertain me. And I live with the fluffiest diva in the western hemisphere.

(Who, btw, likes to get a stroke then pull my hand to her mouth so she can gnaw on it a little. I'm bullied, I tell ya.)

26 How often do you replace your pillows?

When it looks like it needs replacing.

(For some reason DW won't let me add an image so let's pretend Corvidology's banner is here.)

Day 9: Video games

I love playing video games! My first -

Daisy interrupted this post to let me know there are - apparently - monsters down the side of the armchair cushion. I tried to help but that (again, apparently) caused the monsters to jump on my hand. Daisy chased them (and me) off and went back to routing them out from the side of the cushion. Now she's finished, Daisy's eaten some biscuits and gone outside to play in the wind.

Where was I? Oh yeah. My first experience of video games was the ubiquitous Space Invaders game followed by Pac-Man played on those huge machines. And I was absolutely terrible at them.

Then, some time later, I tried Sonic on a friend's Sega Master System, followed by Alex Kidd, and I was hooked. Then, I tried the Sega Mega Drive. It's still my favourite game system. I play video games on my pc and my Kindle but they don't compare to the sheer elation and thrill of the Mega Drive games. They were brilliant. Maybe it's nostalgia coupled with a time in my life when I was able-bodied and more in control of everything around me but I've never found anything that matches.

That's not to say I haven't played some excellent games on my pc. The Dark Parable series are excellent story based games while the Jewel Quest match 3 games are fun to puzzle my way through. I've got some puzzle games (like Elven Mists 2) I play over and over. I really do enjoy video games.

This has happened to me twice over the past 2 days, so I thought I'd post a warning in case anyone else gets hit.

I was reading a messageboard and one of the pages was redirected to a Firefox warning page with a pop up urging me to "download this security patch". Fortunately, I didn't as I'm extremely suspicious of that kind of crap.

I went looking and found this from Firefox.

The ads on the affected pages are hacked to redirect you to a fake webpage. If it happens to you don't download the security patch.

The ones where you have to get small blocks around corners and into specific squares?

If so, this site has stacks of levels to play online. Apparently, the game was originally Japanese and called 'Sokoban'.

Enjoy!
