Episode 1.

"What's Only When I Laugh?" I hear many of you say.

"Only one of the best sitcoms set in a hospital!" I reply.

Norman (Christopher Strauli) is a bit of a mummy's boy and has been admitted with suspected appendicitis. He innocently takes his place in the bed by the window, and thereby sets off a storm.

He's soon joined by Roy Figgis (James Bolam), who's a mystery case who's "not joined up properly down there". He terrifies Norman by saying the doctor's "we'll just take a peep" at Norman's insides will turn into a coach trip, then tops it off with showing Norman something truly horrible.

Suitably traumatised, Norman is no match for Roy who insists the bed by the window should belong to him.

Roy has no sooner claimed his bed when Dr. Thorpe (Richard Wilson) arrives in a good mood. This soon changes when he realises the patient in the bed is "X-ray Figgis".

Dr. Thorpe calls for the Staff Nurse Gupta (Derrick Branche - fun fact, he was in a band with Freddie Mercury from 1958 to 1962), and neither of them are pleased to realise Norman is now in the middle bed.

Dr. Thorpe has finally decided Norman's half-witted and needs a sedative when he's distracted by giggles from the curtains around the first bed where he finds Archie (Peter Bowles) having a massage from a nurse.

Archie's a hypochondriac who was discharged only the previous week. Dr. Thorpe is not pleased.

He attempts to get Archie to leave by assuring him there's nothing wrong with him, but Archie asks for that in writing "for his insurance people". Alarmed, Dr. Thorpe lets him stay.

Having got his way with Dr. Thorpe, Archie sets his sights on the bed by the window. His first move is to convince Roy that the previous occupant, Seymour, died. Alarmed and appalled, Roy demands the middle bed back from Norman.

Norman attempts to stand - uh, lie - his ground but loses.

Gupta returns to take Norman's temperature and realises they switched again.

During the course of his ranting, he reveals Seymour went home. Roy is outraged but has to go off to x-ray. With him out of the way, Archie makes his move, nobbles Norman, and finally gets the bed by the window.

Some time later, Roy returns to find Archie in the bed by the window. But Archie is suspiciously quiet.

It seems, while he got Norman's bed, he also got Norman's operation!
