WildTangent rip off
Jun. 4th, 2013 05:52 pmI know at least one person on my f-list (waves to
admiralandrea) uses WildTangent games aka e-machines games. Well, here's my warning about them.
I used to buy games from WildTangent. When I first got this PC, it already had the e-machines game manager (it later became WildTangent) set up on it, and they had some sort of special offer whereby if you signed up for an account, you got games for cheaper as you bought 'Wild Coins' every month to spend on borrowing games via download. If you liked the game, you could spend a larger amount of Wild Coins to buy the game 'forever'. It was equivalent to one month's Wild Coins per bought game.
What they very carefully hid was that once you cancelled your account, you couldn't buy games with Wild Coins you already owned. They assured you that cancelling your account wouldn't lose you any Wild Coins, (I checked that one out carefully before cancelling), but what they didn't say was that you could no longer use them to buy games...only rent.
So when I cancelled my account then later attempted to buy a game with my still-valid Wild Coins, I couldn't. I went right through their forum and found other posters with the same problem, and *that* was when I found out about not being able to buy. I contacted Support and complained. One of their CSRs got back to me and agreed to let me spend my Wild Coins on buying games in order to use them up.
Great, right? Well, if it had gone as planned it would have been great. I chose my games, he sent me the unlock codes and I downloaded the first two without a problem. After that, the game server crashed and crashed again, no matter how many times I atttempted to download the games that were - theoretically, anyway - mine. When I did manage to get the game, it still refused to allow me to unlock it.
At this stage, it's too much hassle. I'll consider it a lesson learned and buy my games through Big Fish Games who keep an account of my games and let me download them even when my account is inactive.
So, if you're thinking of buying through WildTangent, don't. Unless you're willing to keep on paying them in order to gain access to games you've already bought from them, you won't be able to keep your games if you replace your pc or lose your games for any reason.
