How alternate? A full blown AU or a What if? What ifs are fascinating:
What if John Watson had met Moriarty first?
IMO, Sebastian Moran is a twisted version of John Watson - both are ex-soldiers basically operating as sidekicks to eccentric geniuses who have a deep interest in criminality. There are so many comparisons to be made. So if John had met Jim first, would he have been sucked in? How long before he realised Jim was on the wrong side of the law? John's not stupid but Jim is a genius. In his own way, Jim's as lonely as Sherlock, so he wouldn't readily let a friend go.

Fans and fandom itself. I think fandom as a phenomena is fascinating. It's full of perfectly ordinary people - admin assistants, CSRs, bank clerks, insert job title here - and yet it's overflowing with creativity. Are people drawn to fandom and the creative side of fandom because they couldn't work in the Arts or does fandom bring out a person's creative side?
I wrote stories long before I joined fandom but I started writing fanfic due to fandom. Writng and posting fanfic helped me improve my writing, and also encouraged me to write more.
Writing fanfic is different from writing original fic. With fanfic, readers already know the characters. You don't have to tell them that John's a short blond while Sherlock's a tall whirlwind with a mop of dark, curly hair. The odds are that, if they're reading fanfic, they already know.
There's an advantage to that. But there a disadvantage to being locked into the limitations of those characters. Would John voluntarily go hang-gliding while naked? Uh, no, I really don't think he would. So if you want that character to go joyfully startling the birds every weekend, either invent your own character or turn it into an AU.

Oddly I was thinking along the same lines about fandom yesterday, looking at the Pros Big Bang that's just finished and all the amazing writers and artists. 'Ordinary' people, but goodness, what talent and brilliance and generosity. It's a wonderful thing to be a part of!

Date: 2016-11-04 01:06 pm (UTC)Fandom got me into writing, I'd decided a long time ago that I could write poems but not fics. Fandom changed that (to such an extent that I rarely write poems any more). It also got me into digital artwork, which I am very grateful for!
I might not be writing atm, but I'm still arting (new verb!) and have ideas that could turn my hobby into a small income one day - taking my own photos, turning them into artwork, and selling as cards and framed art. No idea if that will happen or work out, but it's something I'd like to try. If it does, I'll have fandom to thank! :)
