Today's book is One Corpse Too Many by Ellis Peters.
It's the summer of 1138. War is raging between King Stephen and his cousin Empress Maud. Shrewsbury Castle has fallen into King Stephen's hands and those within will pay the ultimate price for their defiance of him.
But there's a murdered corpse hidden in the grisly pile of executed prisoners. Brother Cadfael, a soldier turned Benedictine Monk, realises this and entreats the king for justice for the murdered man.
One Corpse Too Many is the 2nd book in the Brother Cadfael mysteries but it's the 1st set in Shrewsbury, it introduces Hugh Beringar, and it's a gripping read that knocks the 1st book into next week.
