For 10 days, post a picture (DVD cover/poster) of a movie you like.

Today's movie is Without a Clue.

Victorian London is, as so often depicted, a cesspit of crime and every vice imaginable. But the virtuous can sleep easy knowing Sherlock Holmes, the human bloodhound, is on the case and will not rest until the guilty party is brought to justice.

Well, actually, he isn't on the case. Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character dreamed up by Dr. Watson (Ben Kingsley).

Dr. Watson was hoping for a prestigious job when he first solved a crime, so he gave all the credit to his 'friend' Sherlock Holmes. Only people wanted to meet Holmes and things got complicated and Watson hired an out of work actor called Reginald Kincaid (Michael Caine) to pretend to be Holmes.

Now, when our tale opens, Watson is thoroughly sick of dealing with the drunk and lecherous Kincaid, and thinks it's time for the world to know about John Watson, the Crime Doctor!

Only his publisher is appalled, and no one will listen, and he needs Holmes so he can investigate a crime that threatens England's financial stability, so, for one last case, Watson will work with Kincaid (who needs a place to hide from debt collectors).

~~~
This is my favourite film version of Sherlock Holmes. It's hilarious and never fails to make me laugh. Michael Caine is perfect as Holmes and as Kincaid (who declares he couldn't detect horse manure if he stepped in it) while Ben Kingsley is brilliant as the poor, at the end of his tether, Watson.
I have a weakness for pastiches of the Holmes story and have to watch all of them at least once. This one I've seen more than once! :D
Caine was good in this. It was a nice spin on the stories too - though if we're talking Holmes comedy, my favourite is Gene Wilder's "The Adventure Of Sherlock Holmes's Smarter Brother". It's about Holmes's unknown (unexpectedly American!) younger brother, who is furiously jealous of "Sheerluck", and believes himself to be the far better detective. It veers between drama and slapstick, and even throws in a ridiculous song and dance at one point. Great cast, too.
