Today's movie is His Girl Friday (1940).

Walter Burns (Cary Grant) is dismayed to learn his best reporter and ex-wife Hildy Johnson is leaving him and his newspaper to go marry an insurance salesman called Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy). Walter pleads with Hildy to remember his dimple. When Hildy remains resolute, Walter breaks out every dirty trick in the book, and he's accidentally aided by an escaped death row murderer.

This is possibly the first screwball comedy. Directed by Howard Hawks, it certainly has the fastest dialogue and the genre was never the same after. Hilarious and charming, the film pokes fun at anyone within reach, from corrupt politicians to future mothers in law.

I love all the filmed versions of The Front Page but this is my favourite. :D

The 1931 version with Pat O'Brien and Adolphe Menjou is even faster though.

Great choice! Such a good era for Cary Grant. He had some great co-stars, some great scripts, and some great directors.
