The Professionals - Man Without a Past
Nov. 19th, 2020 03:51 pmMan Without a Past is a season 2 episode where Bodie's date with a lovely lady is interrupted by a flower bomb. Despite being warned off by Cowley as Bodie's emotionally involved, Bodie tramples all over the investigation, gets involved with a car chase (twice), is rude to various characters, and comes off with barely a scratch.
Doyle, on the other hand, follows Cowley's instructions, gets run down by a car, is kidnapped, and get used as a punching bag.
Some days, it doesn't pay to get out of bed.
I'm not actually posting about them.
Spoilers and slash under the cut.
The real target for the bomb is Brian Forest, a happily married accountant who appears very boring. It turns out that's his cover story as he worked for the US mafia 20 years ago and he's been in hiding ever since.
The ep guest stars John Castle as Peter Crabbe, a sociopathic killer for hire, whoseboyfriend sidekick, Arthur Pendle, is an incompetent mess. Peter's supposed to kill Brian but has actually made a deal with him. He claims he's setting up a bomb for his flat and Doyle gets to be Peter's dead body double while Arthur can be Brian's dead body double.
In the meantime, the mafia hitmen have worked out they're being doublecrossed. They burst into the flat, shoot Arthur and set about looking for Peter and/or Brian. Arthur staggers to his feet and makes a sharp exit to the lift so he can get to Peter. A hitman follows him while the others try to break into the kitchen where Doyle's hiding. (He didn't fancy the role of First Corpse and got himself into the kitchen where he blocked the door and is now waiting for Bodie to rescue him.)
In the underground car park downstairs, Peter and Brian have finished talking and Peter walks towards the lifts. Arthur stumbles into view just as the the hitman who's after him shoots him again. Arthur executes a lovely dying swan move and hits the floor.
"Arthur!" wails Peter, sounding utterly distraught.
WAIT, WHAT? I thought you were going to kill him too! What about the plan with the bomb and Arthur being Brian's dead body double?
I don't mind if that was all tough talk and what Peter really meant was, "Like I'd kill my pretty boyfriend. Sorry, Brian, you're toast." But the plot doesn't explain that. Next we have Peter raising his hands and telling the hitman, "It saved me the trouble," while looking like he'd like to cry.
Was the plot supposed to show that Peter was actually devoted to his twisted and sadistic little boyfriend and wouldn't harm a hair on his pretty head (unless he wants him to, that is)? Because that "Arthur! (My beloved, my reason for living!)" seems awfully out of place otherwise.
C'mon, Pros fans. I know you're out there. Am I missing something?
