Variations on a Theme

Rodney's haunted by a dead man.
It's not the man himself. Not quite. It's the possibility that it could have been him. Them. Him and his team lying cold and dead on an alternate universe jumping Daedalus that had been a one way ticket for whoever stepped on board.
He's surprised the others aren't more affected.
Well, maybe not the Man Mountain. Ronon has a surprisingly straightforward attitude towards alternate realities: He ignores them. Rodney suspects that's because he can't shoot them, but it works for him.
Teyla accepts them. They are what they are. If Rodney didn't know better, he'd think she's discussed it with that other Teyla and made her peace with it. Maybe she has. It's not just her abilities with her bantos sticks that keeps Rodney cautious around her. If anyone could meet multiple variations of herself without turning a hair, it'd be Teyla.
John... Well, Rodney suspects there's a locked box in the closet of John's psyche that got a little bit fuller recently.
Which brings Rodney back to himself. Unlike the others, he interacted with the other Rodney via his tablet. It's thanks to that other Rodney and his simulations that Rodney was able to figure out a way to put the alternate reality jump into reverse. It's thanks to that other Rodney they survived.
That other Rodney who'll never return home.
Rodney sighs. That other team are probably labelled "missing, presumed dead" in their universe. He wishes he could let their version of Atlantis know, so they can stop looking for them, stop waiting for them, stop hoping the next time the 'Gate activates that they'll come strolling through with yet another wild tale about a Hail Mary that saved their asses. But he can't.
Rodney downloads everything he can from that other Rodney's tablet and tucks the tablet away in his desk. Maybe, one day, he can return it to their Atlantis so their friends can read the goodbye letters that Rodney can't and won't read. Maybe. After all, stranger things have happened.
