Genesis
by Dimity Blue

Gen was not female, but neither was She male; She simply was. Like the end of Hydrogen and the beginning of Genesis, Gen was, always had been, and always would be.

In appearance, Gen looked female, which was a nice shock for all the misogynists who'd been suppressing women in their God's Name since humans first thought of the concept of a Higher Power. Not that Gen was their God, not specifically. No, Gen was supposed to be impartial, though She wasn't really. They were all Hers, you see. The good, the bad; the white, the black; the ying, the yang. Not just humans either. She was the God of all living and unliving creatures.

But, lately, humans had been taking a battering. Gen hadn't paid any attention at first. She had to be hands off. The whole definition of Free Will involved letting humans stand or fall on their own merits. But, lately, they were all falling. The Bad Place had never been so busy, while the Good Place hadn't seen a new face in 500 odd years.

Gen looked into it for a nanosecond and found things had gotten complicated. Humans couldn't do right for doing wrong. Even ordering a sandwich had untold moral failings. Gen would have to right the system without being seen to right the system. Not that anyone was watching Her, but it was the principle of the thing.

She chose her target: A demon, Michael. He wasn't the brightest or the best, but he had a human quality to him that made him very promising. Carefully, gently, She placed a thought in his head.

Michael sat up straight. Inspiration had struck.

Oh, it was perfect, brilliant. Demons were getting so bored with torturing humans. At first they'd react so well to being tortured but then it got harder and harder. Demons were having to come up with the most outlandish things to keep the momentum going. It had been positively embarrassing when they brought out bees with teeth and bears with two mouths. It was so repetitive.

But torturing humans with humans? Michael knew it was going to be a surefire winner.

Gen waited, as she always had. Sooner or later, they were going to have to appeal to her to overhaul the system. She was going to make it so hard for them to get her to agree. They were really going to have to work at it.

She hadn't had so much fun since the big bang.

The end.
