The Maze
by Arnie

The Guide's feet pounded against the ground as he fled along the narrow pathway, edged on either side by tall hedges. The Sentinel was after him and would not be denied.

Reaching yet another dead end, he turned tail and raced back the way he'd come, hoping to be able to find a turn off before the Sentinel caught up with him and ended the chase once and for all. He managed it, though he could hear the Sentinel's feet thudding closer as the Guide threw himself around the corner and quickened his pace, hoping to keep his distance long enough.

Another turn off presented itself and he glanced at it, almost rejecting it, then realised it led to the centre of the maze.

Throwing himself through the gap, he almost stumbled to the pedestal and grabbed the device that could be his salvation, hurriedly turning it on with a flick of his thumb and a deep feeling of relief. With the white noise generator running, all the Guide had to do was keep out of sight and find his way back out.

Carrying the white noise generator with him, he ducked down an exit, then hurriedly zigzagged as much as possible, wanting to keep as much distance as he could between himself and his hunter.

Finally the Guide stopped to take a breather; his heart pounding in his chest until he thought the Sentinel would be forced to hear it through the white noise. After a moment, he continued, not wanting to lose his advantage by resting for too long.

He turned a corner, and stopped with a gasp of horror as he realised his path was blocked by the Sentinel, a dark look on his feral face. For a second, the Guide stared, his mind not believing what he was seeing, then he turned to run.

With a roar, the Sentinel was on him, wrapping an arm tightly around his waist, and knocking the white noise generator to one side before slamming it into the ground. Before the echo of its destruction had died away, the Guide found himself forced to the floor, the Sentinel a heavy weight on his back.

Thoroughly riled by the chase, the Guide bucked and fought; shrieking with fury as he was flipped onto his back with his wrists pinned either side of his thrashing head.

"Submit!"

Ignoring the command, the Guide continued to fight; determined to win his freedom somehow.

There was a snarl of anger, then the Sentinel's head lunged down, forcing its way between shoulder and jaw to bite at the soft flesh of the Guide's throat.

The Guide cried out, attempting to roll to one side in order to escape the bonding heat that was flooding through him, but the Sentinel held him still and the Guide's barriers gave way before the onslaught of his Sentinel's mind.

Finally, the Guide quietened; his mind conquered by his Sentinel. He felt the Sentinel pull back slightly and forced his eyes open, but the strong face above him blurred and he closed his eyes as he sank into the darkness.

When Blair came back to consciousness, he discovered that Jim had moved them from the narrow pathway where he'd met his defeat to one of the benches in the centre of the maze.

"Welcome back, Sandburg."

Lifting his head from where it was resting on Jim's lap, Blair squinted at the sun, realising from its angle that he'd been asleep for hours. "What time is it, man?"

"Time for us to head home."

As Jim moved, Blair sat up and gazed in dismay at the shattered remains of the white noise generator that Jim had thoughtfully brought with them. "You do realise Doctor Stoddard won't lend us any more white noise generators, don't you?" he demanded.

Jim smirked. "I don't like them anyway, Chief. They give you an advantage."

Accepting Jim's hand as he pulled him up from the bench, Blair retorted, "That's the whole point of them, Jim! Without them, you'd catch me in two minutes flat."

The Sentinel grinned and leaned over him, triumphantly. "And that's only if I gave you a head start." Shoving the remains of the device into a bag, Jim added, "Let's get a move on. I want to get back to the loft before the rush hour starts."

"Okay." Blair yawned and stretched before following Jim, trusting to his Sentinel to know the way out. It wasn't until they were out of the maze and heading towards the truck that a thought occurred to him. "Hey, Jim. How did you catch me with the white noise generator on? Did you manage to cut through the white noise without zoning?"

"Not quite."

Jim held the truck door open for Blair and he scrambled in, putting his seatbelt on as he thought that over. "Not quite? What does that mean?"

"I climbed up the hedges and crawled along the top so I could see where you were going."

The door shut and Blair's jaw dropped as he watched his shameless Sentinel circle the truck to reach the other door. As soon as it was open, Blair told him, "That was cheating - you know that, right?"

Jim grinned. "All's fair in hunting your Guide, Chief. You ought to know that one."

Snapping his jaw shut, Blair fumed. "Right, that does it. Next time, I pick the location."

Oh, I liked this! Jim did a Kobayashi Maru! (From Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) He changed the rules of the exercise! (well, in the KM one it was a no win situational exercise, but same point.)

I loved Blair's passion, and how they both were really into it. And how Dr.S wouldn't give them another white noise generator.

Very good!

I love the way it changes throughout so that you really have no idea what is going on. And Jim cheating. Why does that not surprise me when it comes to Blair!
