DISCLAIMER: The Cat is mine but Legolas, the Elves and the Orcs belong to JRR Tolkien and his estate. This was written for fun and no one's paid me for it (pity, but there it is).

Legolas and The Cat
by Arnie (aka Sarah)

The Cat waited for she knew that her prey approached. Silently, and with an infinite patience, she waited for the right moment.

Her prey paused, his keen senses telling him that something was near him but no matter where he looked he could not find who or what.

Finally, he stepped forward and The Cat pounced.

Legolas stopped. "Get off my head."

The Cat purred with delight as he lifted her down and held her close. She had tracked her prey for days and weeks, and now he was hers.

Gently, he put The Cat on the ground. "Go on, shoo," he told her.

She wound her way around his legs, her tail curling around his knee, and purred at him.

He smiled. "Yes, you're very beautiful but you're still not coming with me."

Turning, he walked away in a determined manner, and The Cat followed him. Silent though she was, he knew she was there and he turned back.

The Cat instantly sat down and began to wash her face, her entire body radiating innocence.

"Stop following me!"

She paused, evidently surprised that he thought she was following him. What was she, a stalker? The tilt of her head showed her amusement at his attitude.

"I mean it. My path is too dangerous, Little Cat. You may not come with me."

Her chin tilted at that. She was not Little Cat, she was The Cat, and she knew danger very well.

~~~
The fire flickered in the darkness and Legolas sighed. She was there, he knew it. Turning to face the fire, he gazed across at The Cat sitting on the other side.
"I told you, you can't come with me," he reminded her.
Silence greeted him. Silence and the enduring patience of a wise cat who knows she will gain her objective.
Turning away from the fire to avoid losing his night vision, Legolas gazed out at the woodland surrounding him.
The Cat moved to sit next to him. Not too close, but close enough that he could reach out his hand to stroke her if he chose. Not that she was inviting him.
A smile crept into Legolas' eyes. He understood her, this Little Cat.
Finally, his hand reached out and stroked her head gently. "You will have to leave me in the morning," he told her. "It is not safe for you to follow."
A purr was all the reply he got.
~~~

Morning came and Legolas opened his eyes to find The Cat watching and waiting. The sun was only just over the horizon but it was obvious that she had made her plans and he was part of them.

He shook his head. "Leave now. It will not be safe." He knew she wouild not take his advice but he could not help but try. "Leave. Go back from whence you came. Your family will surely be missing you."

She gazed at him, her big green eyes showing that she understood his words even while she ignored their meaning. He was her Family now and deny it though he would, that fact could not be changed.

Legolas was not surprised when he set off and she followed him.

They had almost reached a clearing when Legolas knew he and The Cat were no longer alone. His keen eyes searched out the multitude of Orcs lying in wait for him, and he quickly lifted The Cat and put her safely on a tall branch.

The Cat's green eyes blinked at him slowly. If he thought he was walking into trouble alone....

The Orcs attacked, and Legolas's bow and endless stream of arrows took out the first five thousand or so, then they were upon him and the Elf was forced into hand to hand combat.

His future looked bleak. Actually, his future looked non-existent until suddenly The Cat, furious that these creatures were daring to attack her beloved Legolas, launched herself into the fray.

With a screech she was on the ground and in front of her darling Elf.

Her eyes, her hiss, her entire body language DARED the Orcs to take one more step forward.

The battle paused....

Legolas, managing to catch his breath for the first time since the Orcs attacked, stared in disbelief as the Orcs backed off.

They'd seen Balrogs in action, they knew what terror those creatures could bring, but nothing compared to The Cat.

The Orcs looked at each other, their fear growing.

The Cat stepped forward, one paw daintily rustling the leaves under her.

Their nerve broke, and with a howl the Orcs fled, leaving Legolas unharmed.

The Cat turned and smirked at the Elf. Even Immortal Elves must give way to the superior wisdom of The Cat.

What a charmine, cute story. And how typical of The Cat!
You have a nice descriptive style.

Thanks, Annie, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wrote this story for a friend of mine, Raphe1 (http://www.livejournal.com/users/raphe1/) as she's as nuts about cats as we are. Plus she was madly in love with Legolas at the time (Jack Sparrow too - hence the Pirate Cat story).
