Day 2 - part 2 - the afternoon
Oct. 23rd, 2006 01:10 amSorry this is taking me so long and that this entry is so short. The weekend seems to have run away from me - possibly due to the inordinate amount of sleeping I did!
Anyway, here's what happened on Saturday afternoon.
Once Garett had left, the writers' circle began. I suggested an escape plan to
fluterbev but she happily went and took her place at the front. I went and sat in the audience. Arianna, Bluewolf and Marion took their places, then it dawned on them that they were one short.
fluterbev grassed on me and they nagged until I took my place. Once I was up there, Christine asked something about how we get our stories - do we have the entire plot right from the beginning, or do we get sections? I answered first, and said, basically, that sometimes I only have the very beginning. I know it'll be a happy ending (I'm addicted to happy endings), but getting there is always a journey, and I don't know how I'll get there until it's actually written. I'm going to expand on my answer here as I was too nervous to explain it all then.
Sometimes, I get the title first and the story leaps to meet it. That happened with "Alas, Poor Fargo". I got the title, and knew that Jim hated the Fargo hat and wanted to get rid of it. The rest of that story appeared as I wrote it. Sometimes, I get a scene that's part of the way in and I have to find my way to it, or, as I said, sometimes I get the very beginning and have to find the rest of the story. Frequently, what happens is a surprise to me. I had no idea I was going to include Hunter in "Reversal of Fortune" until I realised I would have to include an officer from Internal Affairs, and then it made sense to have it be Hunter.
Getting back to the actual day, I think Marion and
fluterbev said pretty much the same as me - that sometimes all you have is the title or one scene - but
fluterbev added that every story can be different in how it's written. The questions continued, though I don't actually remember what any of them were!
I think it was almost 6 o'clock when Rae asked us to finish as we needed to vacate the room so it could be re-organised for the dinner at 7pm. We left, and
luicat and I returned to our room. I had intended to just grab my camera, which I'd left upstairs for all of the day as I didn't realise we could take photos at all that day, but once I was up there, I decided to take a break for an hour.
luicat went back down to the bar while I relaxed.
More coming soon!
