I can't believe the NY marathon is supposed to be going ahead. There are people stuck in the city without water, food and electricity but the mayor of NY said the marathon would only divert "a relatively small amount of Sanitation Department resources". Oh, so that makes it okay then. There are massive generators reserved for the marathon, thousands of cases of bottled water and food reserved for the runners and spectators. I'm pretty sure the people without power, water and food could use those 'relatively small amounts'.

He also said the city had a responsibility to "help companies that need the business, to still generate a tax base". So, basically, it's all down to money again. Businesses are more important than people. Nice, Mayor Bloomberg. Real nice.

I hope anyone who was planning to run/spectate has more compassion and sense than Mayor Bloomberg and stays home.

The mayor's caved and the marathon has been cancelled. Hopefully, all those diverted resources will now be directed to the New Yorkers who need them.

That's good, and yeah, let's hope the resources are spread to those who need them.

Considering it's food and water to provide for over 40,000, I'm sure it'll be used. ::shakes head::

I'm glad he cancelled it. Going ahead would have sent a terrible message to the people still suffering. Pulling police off to manage the route, diverting water to runners when people are thirsty - none of it would have been good.

It does seem like they are making progress in restoring power. That should help a lot!

Sanitation engineers were complaining to their union that instead of working on restoring running water, they were detailed to clean up after the marathon. I really think the running water is more important.

I hope they get all the power restored soon too.

I'm glad this was cancelled before the event in the end! It would have been pure stupidity to let it go ahead under the circumstances.

I think so too. It would have been better to cancel as early as possible, but I think it was the right decision to cancel it in the end.
