When there are 13 of them milling about on screen, it's hard to keep track of which one is which. Especially when brothers have similar names. JRR Tolkien, you didn't make it easy, did you?

Of course, watching them on screen, you don't actually need to know which one is which. But, if you read fanfic (which I may possibly have done), it's nice to put a face to the name.

I finally went to the IMDb and swiped a stack of pictures, then stuck them together so I could keep track of who was who. If anyone's interested, it's under the cut.

It also made me realise how spoiled we were with Lord of the Rings. The Fellowship had a wizard, one Elf, one Dwarf, two Humans and four Hobbits. It was far easier to tell who was who.

They've got some major cool hairstyles going on there... also, I may have stared at Kili far longer than appropriate. Nobody told me there were hot Dwarves, for goodness sake *g*

Thanks! Maybe I should bring this to the next movie, as a sort of crib sheet!! We had it so much easier in LOTR!

Kili certainly has something going on for him. I mean, Thorin is kinda hot, but I think Kili is a lot hotter! :)

I'm just hear to grumpily point out that it's Peter Jackson, not Tolkien who gets the blame for making it impossible to know which character is which. :-P

(See also Celeborn in LotR)

(I don't like Peter Jackson very much. :-P )

I think it's hilarious (and a bit ridiculous) that Kili looks like a hot, normal (but unusually short) person, Thorin like a not quite as hot, normal (but unusually short) person, whichever one the Irish guy from Jekyll played looks like an ugly normal (but unusually short) person

And the rest look like cartoon characters.

LOL! Cute, aren't they? Richard Armitage (Thorin) is far, far better looking in his IMDb picture. (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3506670336/nm0035514) You might want to do some gazing at that too. :oD

Have you seen Richard Armitage's IMDb picture? (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3506670336/nm0035514) Holy moly!

At least it makes it easier when I'm reading fanfic and have to stop and think, "Hang on - which one is that?" :oD

LOL! I can just imagine you whipping the sheet out in the middle of the cinema, then whispering, "Ah, it's okay - that one's Oin!"

Tolkien named the characters and gave brothers similar names, also Tolkien wrote the book and he was the one who had all the Dwarves turning up at once. I should think it took Bilbo a good few days to work out who was who in the book, so no surprise that confusion translates to on screen too.

True. But in the book it's not confusing. Jackson gets so excited about action scenes that he forgets to let us know what sorts of characters we're looking at.

I found it confusing in the book. I kept on reading though on the grounds of "I'll get them all sorted sooner or later".

Gotcha.

I read all of Tolkien's books long before the movie came out, but I didn't think I'd have been able to understand the films had I not read them first.

I didn't read any of the books until after I saw the LotR trilogy. I didn't find the films difficult to follow at all. As I said, I just found it hard to work out which name goes with which Dwarf. Hence my 'cheat sheet'.

Quite!

And  looking above - more people who waited to see Richard Armitage as a hairy dwarf before they noticed him! (Sorry. I realise he just wasn't as famous outside the UK, but this is never, never going to stop making me giggle. Sorry, Richard A, you're just too tall and good-looking. Let's make you short by the powers of CGI and with epic hair and then everyone will notice!!)

(I've been watching him on and off in stuff since North & South in 2004, particularly Spooks, but I did see a bit of Robin Hood. He's a good actor, too, which is important.)

I am English, but I hadn't seen him in anything so wasn't aware of him outside of the people who rave about him. Usually when he's playing Guy of Gisbourne. I think that's why people didn't know him. Hopefully, he'll get a lot more high profile roles now. :oD

Love the cheatsheet! I watched The Hobbit for the first time last night and it came in particularly handy. I liked the film and I'm glad it didn't end on too much of a cliffhanger.

I may also have done some inappropriate staring at that IMDB picture.Cute!

Thanks, Karen! I'm glad it was useful. I was really glad the film ended where it did - it would have been awful if you were left mid-scene with a "will that character survive?!"

That pic of Richard Armitage is rather eyecatching, isn't it? Good grief!
