Quote:
A deaf girl from Pakistan kept as a slave for nine years by a millionaire couple from Salford is to receive £100,000 in compensation.

The victim was repeatedly raped and forced to work at the family's properties as a child for nine years.

Now in her 20s, the victim, who cannot be named, is believed to have been as young as 10 when she was trafficked into the UK.
~~~
£100,000 for 9 years as a slave. If you break it down, that's £213.68 a week. For a 40 hour week, that wouldn't even be minimum wage. For a 168 hour week, it's £1.27 an hour.
The couple are millionaires, so that £100,000 is - at most - one tenth of their assets.
I know no amount of money can give her back the 9 years they stole from her, but that? That's an insult.
So, if you're curious about the price of freedom, there it is.
I was reading the same article a few minutes ago. It's terrible and sad, and I can't help thinking we're all somehow colluding, because there's no way that's right, and doubtless our justice system will let those two creatures walk away after maybe a year or so, because 'our prisons are full/locking people up doesn't do any good' yadda yadda. Hmmmm! /end grump
I just read the article, that's terrible! And at the couple's age they won't have any trouble finding a doctor to certify they are "too sick" to serve their sentence, and they'll be free to flee the country or live it up on their property in no time. The poor girl will be scarred for life, and they won't even lose their house over it. Disgraceful.
It is awful, but she can also apply to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority - they specifically have provisions relating to victims of trafficking. It's not the same as the rules which govern proceeds of crime, which is a piece of legislation more directed at drug dealers and fraudsters, as they say in the article.
I am totally disgusted. I just got done sharing this with my mom and she said that the courts and the jury should have went for more. Then she casually said, May they burn in he'll. I agree with her last statement.
It's terrible. Like you say, no amount of money can give her back those years or heal her scars, but that doesn't seem enough at all. I hope she does go through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, as suggested above, and get more.
