30 Day Fanfic Meme - Day 8
Sep. 26th, 2015 06:44 pm8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
I've written a Mary Sue. Quite deliberately, I might add. She appeared in my SG1 story 'Coffee Breaks', and thoroughly annoyed everyone around her. She was a lot of fun.
As for OCs, tons of stories have OCs in them - little minor side characters who appear for a brief instant.
It's said that we're all the hero of our own story. That little side character who stands at a bus stop, passes by in the street, is annoyed by a main character, or attempts to flirt with one of them, they're often an OC and they all have their own story. It might not appear in my story, it might never be told by me, but those little side characters have full lives of their own, with their own hopes and dreams and fears. They live and breathe, and are fully realised characters, not some idealised hero who's the embodiment of the author.
I wouldn't write me into a story. My life isn't that interesting. I don't even feel like the hero of my own tale - more like I'm passing by, observing others. That's partly why I write. I might as well do something with all those observations. :oD

Date: 2015-09-26 08:17 pm (UTC)I wouldn't write me into a story, either. In fact, the only times I've ever even slightly written a me-like character, I always kill her. It's not exactly deliberate, but maybe a little worrying perhaps?

Date: 2015-09-27 12:48 am (UTC)I may be unduly attached to some of my OCs (Stavely, Robbie and Anais come to mind) but I've never been in doubt that they were supporting characters, either.
I've written omniscient pov a couple of times - if you take the viewpoint that the omniscient narrator needs to be their own pov in the story, then I guess I've self-inserted then. *g*
