I mentioned Carry On Behind the other day. Well, I finished watching it.

It was one of the last Carry Ons, being made in 1975.

Professor Crump (Kenneth Williams) and Professor Vooshka (Elke Sommer) are on an archeological dig right next to a caravan park. Their actions have an unfortunate effect on the holidaymakers there.

This was Elke Sommer's one and only Carry On, and I think she was fantastic. She went from confusing Professor Crump with her questions about "crumpet" (being too cramped) in the caravan to startling Arthur Upmore (Bernard Bresslaw) with her search for "scrubbers" (scrubbing brushes) for her "dirty caravan".

I think the film suffers from a lack of Sid James (he was working in a play) and too much Windsor Davies and Jack Douglas. Their storyline of being on holiday without their wives and trying to pick up two girl campers is cringeworthy. The girl campers treat them terribly and Fred (Windsor Davies) and Ernie (Jack Douglas) put up with it and go back for more because the girl campers are young, sexy girls.

I thought Daphne's subplot was far more interesting. Daphne (Joan Sims) is interfering in her daughter (Patsy Rowlands) and son-in-law's (Bernard Bresslaw) marriage, then is astonished to meet her separated husband, Henry (Peter Butterworth) working on the camp as the oddjob man. Even more astonishing is that he's still in love with her.

Ian Lavender (most famous for being Private Pike in Dad's Army), appears as a holidaymaker, who's on holiday with his wife and a gigantic dog.

Carry On Loving. Sidney Bliss (Sid James) and his supposed wife Sophie (Hattie Jacques) run The Wedded Bliss computer dating agency with the aid of a high tech computer (which also appeared in the Gerry Anderson live action series UFO). In reality, Sid is chasing Esme Crowfoot (Joan Sims) and the computer is all beeps, boops, and flashing lights while Sophie picks a couple's cards out of the drawer.

Bernard Bresslaw is Esme's wrestler fiance, Gripper, and it's not his usual gentle giant character. Gripper is loud, jealous, and ready to break the spine of anyone Esme looks at.

There's a nice subplot of Bertram Moffet (Richard O'Callaghan) falling for model Sally (Jacki Piper) after accidentally mistaking her for his Wedded Bliss date. A year later (1971), Richard and Jacki were playing young lovers again in Carry On at Your Convenience.

Peter Butterworth has a brief cameo playing Dr. Crippen, who's twice widowed and looking for a third wife.

Carry On Behind sounds vaguely familiar. I can imagine some of the conversations about scrubbers and dirty caravans!
