I've been trying to watch this. I've read a bit about Victoria and especially her childhood, so I wanted to watch and enjoy this.

I'm rather disappointed. Why on earth have they included a subplot about an ex-prostitute lady's maid? So far, it seems to be a mix between a historical drama and total fiction.

It also seems to be shot in half-light a lot of the time. When they were putting in gaslighting, I was hoping that would brighten it up a bit, but they changed their minds.

I'd love to read more about Victoria's mother though. She was horrendous. She and Sir John Conroy (who ran her household) attempted to break Victoria's will so she'd have to depend on them. When that failed, they spread rumours that she was easily overwrought and feeble-witted.

I really enjoyed the show, but then I haven't read a lot about Victoria, just seen the odd documentary here and there. As for the sub-plot, I thought it was interesting, and I enjoyed seeing the servant's view of things, regardless of whether it's fact or fiction. The chef who invented battenberg cake is real, though whether anything else to do with him is I don't know.

But then I enjoyed Wolf Hall and I'm sure there's a lot of fiction thrown in with fact for that one too!

I don't know about Wolf Hall - a lot of people raved about that. I'll give Victoria another go sometime. At the moment, it's not grabbing me at all.

I thought it was OK, watchable but nothing special.

I wasn't keen on Jenna Coleman's character in in Doctor Who and when I watched Titanic I kept thinking she was running off to see The Doctor when she wasn't on screen ;-)

But she was in Waterloo Road as a troubled teen and really good in that, so I was hoping her Victoria would be as good.

Also thought the TV series was very similar to the film Young Victoria - though I suppose there's only so much storyto tell.

I read Jean Plaidy's Victoria series a long time ago.

I loved Young Victoria - I bought the DVD and the Amazon video. I rolled my eyes at Prince Albert getting shot but I enjoyed the rest of the film.

Plus, I love Mark Strong as an actor, and he had a large role in that.

Jean Plaidy's Victoria first got me interested in Victoria.

I tried to watch it as well, but gave up after 2 episodes. It just didn't catch my attention. My mom and dad have suggested I watch The Crown, they said that it was very well done. Have you seen that one?

I got all the way through The Crown, though it felt like a slog at times. It is well done, though finding out about inaccuracies they included annoy me. For instance, te speech Captain Townsend gives as to why he and Princess Margaret won't marry, was given by Princess Margaret. What's the point in changing it?

But it is exceptionally well done. It's rather sad too, IMO. I'd hate to be called upon to sacrifice so much of me for what is essentially a lifetime job.

I haven't seen the series, but have read on Victoria's girlhood and yes, her mother and Sir John come across and appalling... control freaks both of them.

I think that's partly what I love about Victoria's life. Her mother and Sir John lost so completely.

Yes, even from a young age she could be right royally ruthless. Not always fairly, but in this case... I'm on her side.

I rather enjoyed it, but it was definitely on the candyflossy side of TV. But very pretty and easy!

It's weird what works so well for different people, isn't it? Maybe I'll get along better if I pretend it's total fiction.
