Harry and Meghan

In all the furore over Harry and Meghan, I find this Buzzfeed article fascinating.

It highlights the difference in how the press covers Kate vs. Meghan. Like Kate tenderly cradling her baby bump vs. Meghan "is it pride, vanity, acting or a new age bonding technique?"

I think my favourite is Meghan endangered Charlotte's life by having lily of the valley flowers in her wedding. Kate also had lily of the valley flowers in her wedding but there was no implication she was trying to off one of her bridesmaids.

If someone was continuously posting crap like this about me, I'd be all, "Screw it, I'm out."

And when you factor in what happened to Harry's mother, you can see why he's worried.

I agree. Especially as the press is encouraging racists in their hatred of Meghan.

Yeah. For the press, presenting a narrative of good princess/bad princess is good business. It might not be racism from their point of view, but it sure looks like it to the rest of us - which can do a lot of damage to young BAME people reading it, and being made to feel unwelcome. It encourages actual racists, as you say. It screws with Harry and Meghan themselves - and potentially little Archie one day. The press don't care though. They never did, and I suspect that they never will.

As for it maybe not being racism: When Danny Baker posted that chimp in a top hat photo for Archie's birth, he didn't expect any criticism. He's in the media business. That, to me, says a lot about the prevailing attitude.

Yes. It's under-representation for the most part. (I think.) I loathe Danny Baker, but as I understand it, he's not at all known for racism. He just posted what he thought was a funny picture, and never made the connection, because he didn't need to. White privilege in a nutshell! There aren't enough black people in high profile media jobs, so nobody stops and thinks. Which makes it easier for the intentional racists as well of course.

I don't think Kate need worry, for a while at least. The press has elevated her to saintly status. Not that it's impossible of course.
