8. What is the worst food you've ever had to force yourself to eat to be polite?

A stuffed pepper. I hate peppers.

It was Elaine's (my aunt's) wedding. She'd told me the veggie option would be pasta. When it came, it was a small stuffed pepper. Everyone else had a full roast dinner on their plates. Christine had gone with me, and she looked at my plate and whispered, "Is that all they're giving you?!"

At least the dessert was nice. I was absolutely starving when I got home though.

Maybe there was pasta somewhere in the pepper! I quite like a stuffed pepper, though of course it does very much depend on what it's stuffed with.

Can't recall ever having to eat to be polite. I do recall having to force down some truly execrable stuff at school though, where you weren't allowed to leave the table until the vile concoction had all been eaten. Ice cream scoops of cold, lumpy mashed potato. The lasting horror that was "cowboy hotpot". It was liver. I suspect the name was to lull us into a false sense of security. It didn't work.

Being liver, you could smell it cooking from very early in the day, and would know precisely what awaited you...

I don't think my schools ever served liver. Thank goodness!

My senior school served "Mr. Brain's Faggots". Aside from the slur (though it wasn't meant as one), there's something deeply wrong with using "Brain" or "Brains" in a food brand name. It's incredibly unappetising.

Ours was cold, lumpy, salty mashed potato. Blech!

Yes, I always thought Brains was a rather unfortunate name too! Didn't help that they looked a bit like cooked brains in gravy might.

I think most Brits understand that the word faggot has a lot of meanings. Americans get a bit alarmed by such things though.

My sympathies! I love peppers but never stuffed. They have a really odd texture that way.

Actually, I love Chile Rellanos but then that's a different type of chile that does cook well. :D

Oh, wow, why do they do that? Or they used to - I'm not vegetarian, but because I have a milk allergy, they'll often just give me the veggie option at things like that and the amount of time it's been pathetic or just dry or random.

(Stuffed peppers actually sound nice to me - but not as a whole meal and certainly not if you don't like them!)

There's no need for veggie food to be pathetic or dry or random. I suspect they just weren't trying.
