Amazon.co.uk have some Patricia Wentworth books for the Kindle - and they've just released a whole stack of them for £2.59! The ordinary priced ones for the Kindle come at £5.99 or £6.99 each (no saving compared to paperbacks!), so it's nice to see a whole pile more for cheap!

If you don't have a Kindle, Amazon have a free "Kindle for PC" programme you can download. If you ever get a Kindle too, it'll let you download whatever books you bought for the PC onto your Kindle too. They also have a pile of free books or very cheaply priced books.

As for the Patricia Wentworth books, she usually writes about Miss Silver, an ex-governess turned private detective. The books are set during and after World War 2 and in the 1950's. They're not gruesome (no graphic depictions of dead bodies) but they are engrossing. She includes details about rationing and what it's like to live then. They're (IMO!) really well-written books.

I checked Amazon US too, and they've got the same books at a low price as well. So if you're looking for a new author to read and want to try one for cheap, go take a look!

That series sound intriguing - I do like good historical detective books, though I've tended to stick to medieval or Roman before now!

Not sure how well I'd get on with reading them on the PC - then again, I read fanfic on it, so why not books?!

Thanks for the heads up!

They're not historical as such. So far as I'm aware, they're set when they were written, but they do really have a flavour of the past.

The Listening Eye was the first one I read and it got me hooked. Vanishing Point is another really good one, and both of those are just released at the cheaper price. :oD

I hope you enjoy them!

Sounds interesting :-)

There's a Kindle app for most smartphones too. Though I did download it I'm not using it because I've use another app that I had before the Kindle one came out and it is for books in a different format - ePub.

I've never paid for ebooks but have read quite a few on my phone over the last couple years, there's plenty of free ones, Jane Austen etc. Even found some free Mills and Boon ;-)

Still prefer real books but it's certainly very handy to always have something available to read on my phone!

There might be a panel at the next convention I'm going to about using eReaders for fanfic and fanzines, which could be interesting.

I know the Guttenberg Library has a whole stack of free books to download. I love getting books for nothing. :oD

I've heard of ePub but never tried it. Is it any good?

I'm getting a Kindle soon (ordering it next week), so I'm hoping I can transfer fanfic on to it. If not, I'll just have to slum it with books. Oh, the hardship!

A couple of years ago I found out that I could read Mobipocket books on my Nokia phone.

That Mobi format is also read by the Kindle, as long as it not been protected. (Amazon own Mobipocket but don't support any of the books they sell/sold on the Kindle!)

However, they have free software that converts word documents, pdfs etc to the unprotected Mobi format.

http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/default.asp?Language=EN

So you could use that to make an eBook from fanfic, which I did a couple of times. Also converted some PDFs to Mobi because that made them easier to read on the small phone screen.

I only use ePub now because Mobi don't do software for Android phones. By the time the Kindle app came out I was used to the other app and I have a nice little "bookshelf" of books so it was easier to stay with it!

Haven't made any of my "own" eBooks yet though, I think it's possible but if I can't I know I can use Mobi again.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your Kindle, can never have enough books, whatever the format LOL!

That's really useful, thank you - I've got Mum a Kindle for Christmas and I've been scratching my head what to put on it for her - that sounds like something she could easily get into and enjoy. Now, as long as I can figure out how to work it... *g*

Amazon have a whole stack of books for free or for cheap. You can search their Kindle store for specific authors...which you've probably already guessed.

Good luck working it out! I'm hoping it's not too difficult to use as I'm ordering one next week.
