BBC article.

Letting water get anywhere near your contact lens can let Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) infect your eyes.

AK is "a rare but serious eye infection caused by a micro-organism that's common in tap water, sea water and swimming pools".

Symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis include the following:

Sensitivity to light and excessive tearing
Blurred vision with eye redness and pain
Sensations of having something in your eye
Severe headaches

Another reason to stick to good old glasses.

True! I'd far rather have perfect eyesight, but I'm glad glasses exist.

Thank goodness I couldn't stand wearing contact lenses and gave up really quickly on them!! This should be more widely known and be warned about!

Thanks for posting this, I'm off to post on my own journal and FB.

I googled it to make sure it was true. One of the sites I saw, said 89% of cases involved contact lenses. :o(

I think that contact lenses are great if you are the type of person who needs them vs. glasses. Like my husband, for instance. His work is as a Forestry Consultant. He's constantly hiking out in the woods in very steep and treacherous terrain. Glasses are not a good fit because he would probably lose them quite easily. But he's hardly ever had a contact pop out of his eye, so he wears them for that.

But me, personally, just seeing someone try to put on their contacts freaks me the hell out! OMG! I HATE anything in my eyes. There is NO way I could do that everyday. Nope. Not even....

Yeah! Contact lenses don't appeal to me either.
