I've been trying to watch this. I've read a bit about Victoria and especially her childhood, so I wanted to watch and enjoy this.

I'm rather disappointed. Why on earth have they included a subplot about an ex-prostitute lady's maid? So far, it seems to be a mix between a historical drama and total fiction.

It also seems to be shot in half-light a lot of the time. When they were putting in gaslighting, I was hoping that would brighten it up a bit, but they changed their minds.

I'd love to read more about Victoria's mother though. She was horrendous. She and Sir John Conroy (who ran her household) attempted to break Victoria's will so she'd have to depend on them. When that failed, they spread rumours that she was easily overwrought and feeble-witted.

Weird. I can't find the latest Friday Five post. Anyway:

1. Did/Do you own a typewriter?
I did. I had a plastic one when I was a kid, then a Brother portable from in my teens. It was pretty good - it could type in *two* colours. Then I had an electronic one, then a Word Processor.

2. If you own one, what was the last thing you typed on it?
I don't have anything but a pc now. The last thing I remember typing on my Word Processor was a Star Trek spoof.

3. Have you ever used *gasp* carbon paper for multiple copies?
Not outside of typing class.

4. Ever use any of these?

 photo Typewriter correctors.jpeg
No, but I have used Tippex. My electronic typewriter had a corrector ribbon.

5. Did you take typing (not to be confused with keyboarding) in school?
Yep. Those typewriters weighed a ton!

Yesterday, on [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58's LJ, I posted about an advert I liked from decades ago. This one:

Which led me down the rabbit hole of 1980's adverts. Another of my favourites was the Kit-Kat pandas:

And then there was the Carling Black Label ad that was based on the Levi Jeans ad:

So what ads did you like?

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58 while her back was turned.

Just like last time, the rules of playing this game are easy: introduce me to a new friend (or two, or three) over on YOUR LJ and I will do the same in a comment here.

This isn't your typical free-for-all cold-call friendzy, think of it more as an intimate dinner party - if we have been friends for awhile, you know my posting style and interests, my commenting habits (ie: I am not interested in connecting to folks who rarely comment) and I know yours... If you were having a dinner party, who would you introduce me to during cocktail hour? Who would you sit me beside at the dinner table? Who is it you want to connect at this evening soiree?

If you want to meet a new friend or two, drop me a comment here, and then share this post in YOUR LJ with a comment introducing me to the friends you think I should meet.

So the invite is open - I'm mixing up the cocktails, so put on your evening attire and join me for another round of Grow The Circle!

Is this a thing now?

Note: The author claims these were all true events.

I presume including an SS female guard named Leah.

After watching Labyrinth of Lies the other day, I realised I really knew nothing about the Nuremberg trials apart from the most obvious facts. So I looked around and found The Nuremberg Trials on Amazon UK for 98p.

It's 240 pages and was rather riveting to read, though I had to make notes as to who was who. It focussed more on the people in court, rather than the harrowing evidence presented but the parts they did mention were (obviously) horrific.

It only covers the main trials (military leaders/politicians), not the Doctors or Judges ones.

1. What was your favorite past time in high school?
Reading.

2. What is your all time favorite board game/card game?
Card game: Spider. Board game: Probably Scrabble

3. What is the last movie you saw at the theatre and what did you think of it?
Heck, that was years ago... The Return of the King? I loved it. Strike that. The last film I remember was (OMG) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It was pretty awful.

4. What is something (no matter what kind of mood you're in) that makes you happy the moment you do it, see it, or hear it?
My cat Daisy. She's a nutter.

5.Do you believe that crop circles are made by human or alien?
Humans. Maybe the weather sometimes.

I finished watching this today. It was absorbing and unsettling...and based on true events.

I found this lurking in my documents. I don't know where I saved it from but it makes me laugh!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] leesa_perrie and [livejournal.com profile] snailbones for helping me upload it. I don't know what I was doing wrong!

Any idea how to upload a gif icon? I don't normally go for gifs but this one's adorable.

In case some of my UK flist are interested:

Despicable Me is available to buy on Amazon Video for £2.99.

Bertie and Elizabeth (about George VI and the Queen Mother) is available for £2.49.

I don't know how long they'll stay at those prices. Last I looked, Bertie and Elizabeth was £10.

A police officer and a woman have died and others are injured. They're saying it's a terrorist attack.

It looks like the attackers have been captured.

Strike that. It looks like the attacker has been killed.

Londoners survived the IRA. A car driver and a guy wielding a knife will get nowhere.

Shamelessly stolen from [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook.

1. Comment to this post with "I surrender!" and I'll assign you the basis of some TV show idea. (Science fiction show, medical drama, criminal procedure, etc...)
2. Create a cast of characters, including the actors who'd play them.
3. Add in any actor photos, character bios and show synopsis that you want.
4. Post to your own journal.

I've already done 2 of these and it's a lot of fun. So, come on, surrender!
dimity_blue: (Book and glasses)
In case you don't know it, the I Surrender meme is a creative writing challenge. You are given a premise and have to create a TV series around that idea.

[livejournal.com profile] lost_spook gave me:

A detective (Victorian, Golden Age or modern, as you please) is hired by a very strange client - which leads the detective into becoming the no. 1 consulting detective for all supernatural and mystical beings in the country. There seem to be a lot of them...

1) What was your first word?
"No!" Apparently my mum was trying to feed me my veggies and I objected. Loudly.

2) How old were you?
Not a clue. At a guess, I'd say the usual age for a first word as no one ever mentioned waiting around for me to talk or worrying that I wouldn't.

3) Who heard you say it?
My mum and her parents and her siblings. Elaine (my aunt) has pointed out the irony of my now being a vegetarian.

4) Did you have trouble pronouncing any words as a kid?
Words with an 'r' in the middle, including my own name (Sarah). As an anxiety-ridden teen, the thought of slipping up and introducing myself as 'Sawah' was mortifying to me.

5) Are there any words you consistently mispronounce today?
If I'm tired, I still struggle with the 'r'.

Okay, you have all the might of the BBC at your disposal and a brief to make a big historical drama of a period of your choice! (Up to you whether it's well-researched and faithful or bears no real relation to actual historical facts whatsoever.) Only qualifier is - not something that's been done several times already.

(Sorry. Is that too evil?)
